Hydrodynamics

Advanced 2D and 3D modelling of hydrodynamic processes

Hydrodynamic modelling is central in most modelling tasks in the marine area. Apart from being important in itself, it also forms the basis for a number of other tasks, such as sediment transport simulations, different kinds of spreading and dispersion studies and studies of water quality or ecological systems. Defining boundary conditions and bathymetries can pose important challenges for the modeller. Our MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 software come with a large number of tools that make the modelling process more easy, productive and safe.

The hydrodynamic (HD) module in both MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 solves the equations for the conservation of mass and momentum as well as for salinity and temperature in response to a variety of forcing functions. The HD module allows you to specify a variety of hydrographic boundary conditions, initial conditions, bed resistance and wind forcing. It also allows you to include different types of sources and sinks as well as a number of different structures. Density variations can be treated in different manners and radiation stresses from wave simulations can be readily included.

The hydrodynamic module integrated in MIKE 21 and MIKE 3 enables you to model:

  • Assessment of hydrographic conditions for design, construction and operation of structures in stratified and non-stratified waters
  • Environmental impact assessments
  • Coastal and oceanographic circulation
  • Optimisation of ports and coastal protection infrastructures
  • Lake and reservoir hydrodynamics
  • Cooling water, recirculation and desalination
  • Coastal flooding and storm surge
  • Inland flooding and overland flow
  • Forecast and warning systems
