Helping to improve the water supply and distribution system in Rajasthan, India

In order to benchmark the water supply and distribution system in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, we conducted hydraulic modelling of the system in 222 towns. In so doing, we helped the state government in their objectives of equalising water pressure and enabling its equitable distribution.

During the course of a study that we conducted in several Rajasthan towns, we observed that most of the junctions have inadequate pressure in the water distribution system. High head losses were noted in some areas and low terminal pressure in others. As such, the water supply was intermittent and the efficiency of the system was compromised.

As part of the benchmarking process for the water supply and distribution system, we conducted a detailed study in 222 towns in the state. Our study was classified into four stages – model building, model calibration, optimisation and reporting.

With MIKE URBAN – part of our MIKE by DHI software suite – we managed and analysed all the data efficiently. We also offered to provide solutions to optimise Rajasthan’s water distribution network with the help of our knowledge and experience in water modelling.

The study and its results provided an immediate solution to the challenges facing the demand-loaded water distribution network of Rajasthan. It also gave an estimate to the state government about future improvement plans for water distribution networks.
