Sustaining the acceleration of global offshore wind energy

DHI contributes to more efficient clean offshore energy by leading the development of a new metocean project.

Across many locations in the world, offshore wind energy is growing at a rapid pace. To sustain this growth, we are happy to announce that DHI has received support from the energy technological development and demonstration program (EUDP) to lead the development of a new metocean data project - 'Global Atlas of Siting Parameters Ocean and Coast (GASPOC)'. 


The purpose of the GASPOC project is to deliver fast access to high-quality metocean siting data for design and operational planning wherever offshore wind energy companies and service providers operate. Through a scalable quality and cost structure ranging from free general data analytics to more customised data services, the value of metocean data can be accessed by anyone in the offshore wind energy value chain, resulting in lower CAPEX and OPEX costs. This will be achieved through digital services using new high-quality global ocean models with satellite data assimilation as well as automatic numerical and statistical model downscaling, analytics and uncertainty descriptions for certifiable offshore wind energy applications. Thus, enabling decision makers in the offshore industry to quickly access site conditions with high accuracy in order to make the right decisions at the right time. 

With kick-off on 1 September 2020, the GASPOC project will run for a 3-year period. The project will be guided by DHI with the support of external project partners, including DTU Wind energy, Vento Maritime and Heliplanner, while Ørsted, MHI Vestas, World Bank and C2Wind will contribute through co-creation workshops and active project advisory.
