Inspiring flooding seminar in Phuket

On 22 October 2014, we conducted an executive level flooding seminar in Thailand. 27 participants gathered in Phuket to learn more about our technologies for different types of flooding and flood warning systems.

Every year, Thailand faces floods, drought and problems with water pollution – issues that affect both lives and property and are likely to increase in severity in the future.

To address these challenges, we conducted the executive seminar titled ‘MIKE CUSTOMISED Real Time – Disaster Decision Support System’. It was an excellent opportunity to share our knowledge and technologies in relation to flooding, especially focused on the southern region of Thailand.

The seminar was arranged in collaboration with the Southern Natural Disaster Research Center at Prince of Songkla University. 27 participants gathered at the Outrigger Laguna Phuket Beach Resort in Phuket. They came from southern regional offices of government agencies, such as the Royal Irrigation Department, Department of Water Resources, Thai Metrological Department, Department of Groundwater, Marine Office, Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Regional Center, Hadyai Municipality, Regional Environmental Office, Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Rachaprapa Dam) and Phuket Provincial Administrative Organisation.

The Director of Southern Natural Disaster Research Center, Dr. Thanit Chalermyanont, gave the opening speech on the topic ‘Had Yai flooding - in the past, present and future’. Our modelling experts continued the seminar by presenting and demonstrating our MIKE CUSTOMISED and MIKE by DHI software technologies, including:

  • MIKE CUSTOMISED Real Time features
  • water resources software for flood warning
  • software for urban flooding
  • marine software for tsunami, oil spill analysis and storm surge

"This seminar was a great opportunity for us to meet and discuss mutual water-related challenges and to share our insight on how to develop the best possible solutions for water management and sustainability in Southern Thailand. Our advanced water modelling tools integrate with existing technology to track, forecast and manage various scenarios efficiently, and we were pleased to see the great interest that the participants showed in our software,” said Henrik Refstrup Sørensen, Solution Software Business Manager, MIKE CUSTOMISED by DHI.

We would like to thank participants, honoured speaker and co-organisers for making this a successful and inspiring event.
