DHI Vietnam holds MIKE by DHI seminar in Cambodia

On 2 July 2013, DHI Vietnam, in cooperation with Cambodia’s Department of Environmental Impact Assessment (under the Ministry of Environment), organised a seminar in Phnom Penh. The seminar focused on mathematical modelling in relation to flood forecasting, morphology and climate change.

As part of the full-day seminar, our experts introduced the most recent news about and functionality of MIKE by DHI to Cambodian participants. Around 40 people from different ministries, professional organisations, water organisations, consultants and universities attended. Our experts and Cambodian presenters shared their knowledge, skills and experience of:

• flooding
• environmental impact assessment
• climate change

Increasing floods, construction of an upstream power dam and sand mining have caused growing environmental problems in Cambodia. Environmental impact assessment (EIA) is obligatory for all investment project to be approved. This can help identify problems before they occur, allowing the country to take appropriate measures.

In Cambodia, modelling is not utilised as part of standard EIAs. Our seminar highlighted the benefits of using modelling to closely examine long-term impacts. In addition, it also demonstrated ways our modelling software could assist participants in many aspects of their day-to-day work and management.
