DHI has released MIKE 2024 Update 1, the latest version of the MIKE Powered by DHI software suite featuring advancements across four products within the suite.
 
The latest release includes features, tools and improvements designed to streamline model building, simplify data maintenance and optimise results sharing. Clients with a valid Service Maintenance Agreement (SMA) or subscription can take full advantage of these latest features at no additional cost!   
 
Key features in the MIKE 2024 Update 1 release:
 

MIKE+ enhances usability with several new features: Improved results viewing, MIKE+Py integration on GitHub for Python-based database interactions, expanded Water Hammer simulation results and a new Q-H plot for fire flow analysis.
FEFLOW introduces enhancements in its latest update: An upgraded 3D Supermesh Preprocessing Panel, an enhanced 3D Volumetric Mesh Generator by Geode as well as a new FEFLOW Engine subscription option, which provides access to powerful tools for model calibration and uncertainty analysis at a lower cost.
MIKE SHE releases enhancements aimed at optimising user workflows: Improved processes for model calibration and reporting, enhancements in collection system coupling, offering greater flexibility in analysing groundwater impacts as well as water quality simulation improvements designed to be particularly beneficial for projects where surface flow impact is minimal.
WEST offers advancements to enhance its functionality: The extension of ASM2dMod to include nitrous oxide (N2O) producing pathways, the incorporation of simple photovoltaic and wind energy production models to expand its utility in energy-related analyses, plus a new sample project to showcase the updated influent fractionator for ASM2dMod.

DHI launches new marine forecasting solution for offshore wind operations

DHI has released its latest innovation—DHI BlueCast, a marine forecasting solution for the offshore wind sector. With DHI BlueCast, users can expect to receive precise, high-resolution and data-driven predictions to enhance the management of planning and operational risks.
 
Building on the foundation of Water Forecast established in 2001, DHI BlueCast is designed to address , which includes installation operations in areas with varying depths and strong tidal currents. Examples are using cranes to install 100m long blades on wind turbines or ensuring the safety of workers when transferring to access ladders from vessels. DHI's clients have expressed a strong demand for more precise and customised forecasting solutions due to the limitations of traditional methods, which often compromise efficiency and productivity. DHI BlueCast meets this need with highly accurate predictions that are critical for successful offshore operations.

DHI appoints experienced green profile to the board

Tove Feld joins the Board of Directors at DHI A/S. She is an experienced board profile with a background in international management and specialises in sustainable technologies and the green transition. Tove Feld replaces Merete Søby, who has been a member of the board since 2016.
Tove Feld has just joined the Board of Directors at DHI at the company's annual general meeting. 
Jakob Thomasen, Chairman of the Board of DHI, says: 
  
‘Tove has solid experience in international management, strategic transformation and scaling of technology-driven companies and is therefore the perfect match for DHI. With our DHI+ strategy, we are working to strengthen the development of DHI's unique software solutions and technologies to solve the global challenges with water and water environments. Tove's special competences within sustainable technologies and the green transition will make her a great asset to the company. I am very much looking forward to the upcoming collaboration.’ 
 
Tove Feld has 30 years of experience in leadership and strategic transformation from several energy and infrastructure companies and has previously worked in international, executive positions at Ørsted, Siemens Gamesa and DNV, among others. In recent years, she has held a number of positions as a professional board member on the boards of Cloudberry Clean Energy ASA, Polytech A/S and FORCE Technology. FORCE Technology is also a Research and Technology Organisation (RTO or GTS in Danish) like DHI. The task of the seven Danish RTOs is to accelerate the business community's adaptation of new knowledge and technology. 
 
‘Throughout my career, I have been driven by making a difference for the individual company and for society as a whole. I am motivated by DHI's strong mission and purpose and the company's 60-year history of making a positive difference to our planet. There is huge potential in combining this strong purpose with an innovative technology-driven approach, which I am very much looking forward to exploring and developing’, says Tove Feld. 
 
Tove Feld replaces Merete Søby, who has been a member of DHI's Board of Directors since 2016, for the past four years as vice chairman, but who is now stepping down. Jakob Thomasen says:

DHI A/S once again delivers record-high growth across all global business units with 11.2% revenue growth in 2023. DHI also increases investments in research, development and innovation in water technology.
 
In 2023, DHI’s specialists worked on enabling a sustainable future for water in 2,700 projects all over the world. The financial results reflect the increased activity and show another year of very high growth rates. Despite a financially challenged market in China, which affected revenue and earnings negatively, both order inflow and revenue increased to the highest ever in the company’s 60-year history. Revenue increased to EUR 132.1 million, which corresponds to an organic growth of 11.2%, beating the former growth record set in 2022. Order inflow increased by 13.3%. EBITDA was EUR 2.4 million, which was EUR 0.7 million or 41% higher than in 2022, after increased investments in research, development and innovation.
 
Mette Vestergaard, CEO at DHI, states:

In 2023, DHI increased its investments in research, development and innovation to EUR 14.4 million, a step-up of 6.7%. With the increase in investments, DHI is focusing on bringing more solutions and more knowledge faster to market to make a positive difference to the sustainable development of the world’s water resources.
 
DHI expects to continue the growth in both revenue and earnings in 2024.
 
Selected projects in 2023
 

DHI partnered up with Copenhagen University and GEUS to establish a new Danish research centre, which will investigate how wetlands can help fight global climate change. In the next six years, Global Wetland Center will build up more knowledge on how wetlands can reduce the emissions and increase the absorption of greenhouse gasses. The Novo Nordisk Foundation has provided approximately EUR 8 million in support for the establishment of the new research center.
DHI received a visit in 2023 from the Belgian Energy Minister, Tinne Van der Straeten, at DHI’s headquarters in Hørsholm. The minister came to view the large-scale model of the world’s first energy island, the Belgian Princess Elisabeth Island. Once completed, the energy island will connect offshore wind farms in the North Sea with the mainland. With a size of 8.6 x 3.8 metres, the model of Princess Elisabeth Island (1/60) is one of the largest models ever built in DHI’s wave basins, and the DHI experts tested the design’s resilience to currents and waves.
A DHI project on the mapping of marine habitats using satellite data was announced to be one of four selected projects in the United Nations Development Programme’s third Ocean Innovation Challenge. A web platform called MCSAV will support the mapping of mangroves, corals and aquatic vegetation using earth observation images of Semporna in Sabah, Malaysia. With the platform, stakeholders will gain easier access to planning, managing and monitoring marine habitats in the area, which can consequently help strengthen coastal societies.


Using a pioneering genetic method, researchers from DHI are working with Sund &amp; Bælt, the state-owned Danish infrastructure company, on mapping marine life along the southern coast of Lolland, near the construction site of the Fehmarnbelt tunnel to Germany. The aim is to apply the findings to establish new insights into the marine environment's ability to adapt to changes due to human activities.
Researchers are currently navigating the waters close to the coast at Rødbyhavn to collect water samples. These samples harbour genetic traces, known as eDNA, from numerous species and are now being analysed.
While the method for analysing DNA traces in seawater is still evolving, it has enormous potential. It promises to offer a better understanding of marine life just metres below the surface along the shores.
Ole Brodnicke, marine biologist at DHI and expert in the hunt for life beneath the ocean's surface, says, ‘The advantage of the eDNA method is that from a single cup of seawater, we can accurately identify the species inhabiting the area. These could range from birds and fish to crustaceans and molluscs, including species that are elusive and rarely observed. Moreover, we don't require a full team of marine biologists or ornithologists to identify the species.’
 
He relies on an open, international research database containing DNA profiles of the majority of known marine species. However, precision is paramount during both sample collection and the subsequent analysis of the DNA mix extracted from the samples.
‘The method of sample collection is crucial. We can't simply gather water from the surface, as it contains DNA traces from seagulls and various other species that may not necessarily reflect life deeper down. We collect samples closer to the seabed, yielding precise local results’, states Ole Brodnicke.

Water is rapidly becoming an increasingly critical resource. Climate change, increasing populations and growing urbanisation and deforestation are all putting pressure on the globe’s water resources.
 
Nations and intragovernmental organisations are constantly looking for ways to protect critical bodies of water, not least inland water bodies. And to do so, you need to continuously monitor their dynamics. But how can you most effectively track the dynamics of Earth’s surface water?  
 
The challenge of monitoring large bodies of water 
 
Inland water bodies include lakes, rivers and reservoirs and they provide water for domestic usage and agriculture and may also be sources for hydropower and recreation. But in most countries, governments only measure water resources with level measurements in major reservoirs and along a few river flow stations. These only represent a small portion of the overall water resources and there is consequently a large knowledge gap.
 
What if you could simply watch water from space? 
 
WorldWater is a pioneering project applying comprehensive satellite image analyses and tools to offer more accurate and detailed monitoring of surface water dynamics than has been previously possible. WorldWater is sponsored by ESA, the European Space Agency, and partners in the project are DHI, Gisat, Geoville, Danish Technical University and GRID-Arendal.  
  
What have been the outcomes of the WorldWater project so far? 
 
Recent outcomes of the WorldWater project include full national monitoring information of the inland water bodies in nine pilot countries/regions: Colombia, Mexico, Gabon, Zambia, Greenland, Thailand, Tajikistan, Denmark and the Volta basin in West Africa. Other key outputs include an online porcessing system and a cloud-based open-source toolbox as well as an open-for-all global dissemination portal. The portal contains information on surface water dynamics and statistics that are derived using advanced algorithms and processing of the entire archive of freely available satellite data from Sentinel-1, -2 and -3 of the European Copernicus mission. 
 
The ultimate aim of the project is to enable decision-makers and river basin authorities to gain more accurate and detailed information about the development of vulnerable water bodies so that they can implement effective measures for water body management and protection. Armed with the services developed in the WorldWater project, stakeholders can report and monitor water dynamics over time in alignment with the global water agendas, especially the Sustainable Development Goal on ‘clean water for all’ (SDG 6) and the ‘climate action goal’ (SDG 13). 
 
What’s next? 
 
At a recent partner meeting in Rome, members from the participating organisations not only reviewed the progress they had made in mapping the world’s inland water bodies. They also discussed critical next steps, including how the tools and services demonstrated in the project can be fully adopted by countries in the long term. This can be achieved by implementation in key national institutions and by integrating or expanding existing infrastructures for water and environmental monitoring.
